4 Types of Acne Scars

Here's exactly what you need to know about the different types of acne scars. Scars developed by acne are different for different people. And the way you treat these scars depends on the type of scarring that you have. There are generally two categories of acne scars: 1) acne scarring caused by tissue loss; and 2) acne scarring caused by excessive tissue. Within these two broad categories, acne scars fall into 4 types:

1. Ice Pick Scars

The name given to this type of acne scarring is similar to what you would see if you punctured a piece of plastic with an ice pick. Ice Pick Scars appear either as shallow or deep indentations that are small in shape. The skin appears as if it was pierced by a very sharp instrument. It may look like a tiny deep hole or a can be larger like an open pore on the skin.

This type of acne scarring is most commonly found on the cheeks and nose. Ice Pick Scars usually develop from the infection of a blemish or cyst that has destroyed the skin tissue leaving an indentation like scar.

2. Boxcar Scars

Boxcar Scars usually resemble the scarring caused by chickenpox. They are oval or round depressions with sharp edges. These are wider and shallower than ice pick scars, and cover a larger area. They may give the skin a pitted look. These are usually found on the temples, forehead, and cheeks, but may also appear on other body parts.

This type of acne scarring occurs when there is an acne inflammation that destroys collagen fibers thus there is a loss of tissue. This loss of tissue causes the skin to collapse creating a depression in this area of the skin. Boxcar Scars can be light to severe.

3. Rolling Scars

These acne scars are caused by tissue damage beneath the skin. Rolling Scars resemble a rolling hillside or wavy look. These are most commonly found on the forehead and cheek area.

These types of scars develop because of the pulling and binding occurring underneath the skin in the area where the tissue was damaged.

4. Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic Scars are red bumps or tissue mass that appear in the damaged skin area. This type of scarring is caused by acne and can also be caused by a wound. Hypertrophic Scars may fade away with time. This type of acne scarring often grows bigger than the skin area originally affected.

This type of scarring occurs when the body’s repair process works overtime to heal the area and over produces collagen fibers. This overproduction results in raised skin tissue that gives the skin a doughy and lumpy appearance.
